Federal law. NFL can not play a game when a college or high school gamer is being played within 75 miles. Also, in the old days many players had to work outside of the NFL and NFL couldn't compete with thew more popular big colleges.

Initially to avoid competition with high school and college football, which were far more popular. Today almost all games are scheduled for the time and day that ESPN dictates.

High school football plays Friday, college is on Saturday. They do Sunday so all the attention is on the NFL.

That used to be true. Since the NCAA sold its soul to ESPN, college games are like to be broadcast any day of the week at any time.

Because you need about a week between games and most people are off work on Sunday.

Because that's when there's an audience and colleges played Saturday and high schools on Friday nights.

Because their core audience is normally working the rest of the week or out enjoying their day off on Saturdays. Also Sundays have traditionally less programming during the day.

For as long as I can remember, the traditional days for football have always been: High School Friday night, College Saturday, and Professional on Sunday.
