Why doesn't the average American realize only 12 states have 18 years old as the age of consent?

The United States of America is an interesting place when you think about it, even though only 12 states have the age of consent at 18, the average American claims that is the nation wide standard.

In reality 30 states say 16 is the age of consent and 8 say the age of consent is 17. Another thing to note is Canada and The United Kingdom have 16 as the age of consent across the board, so does that mean the average American is too stupid compared to Canada and The UK [rhetorical].

I'm just tired of someone whose 18 or barely over getting accused of being a 'kiddie fiddler' for dating someone one or two years before only 12 states say they are the age of consent.

It's like the parents who accuse the 18 year old boyfriend of rape because he's dating their 17 year old daughter, it happens all the time.

The federal age of consent in the United States is 18. Although, that only applies to instances where the federal government would have jurisdiction.

The United States is at its core a federation of 50 individual states, and those states are the primary governing bodies over that territory. The vast majority of laws that govern people are state laws.

Even in states where the age of consent is 16 or 17, that does not mean parents are powerless to keep creeps from perving on their 16 and 17 year old children. They even have considerable influence to additionally protect their children who are 18 or older.

    Because you're incorrect. It's only 11 states. And it's 31 states at 16. It is 8 states at 17.

This is somewhat childish. Your WAG does not establish what the "average American" thinks about anything.

They have lives and this is not an issue unless you are an 18-year old boy looking to score.

I'd say the average American knows the age of consent for the state where they grew up.

You just addressed the point, why doesn't the average American realize only 12 states considers someone under 18 years old as underage.
