Why did Hubert Humphrey lose the 1968 United States presidential election?

Primarily because he was Lyndon Johnson's vice-president. Johnson was a discredited president, with the Vietnam War going badly and being unpopular and for civil disorder at home.
Americans wanted a president who would crack down on the rioting at home and end America's involvement in Vietnam.
Richard Nixon promised to just that, with running on a law-and-order platform and by claiming to have a secret plan to end the war in Vietnam.

The same reason Gerald Ford lost the election in 1976.
Political winds had changed.

He was associated with president LBJ and the endless war in Vietnam. Which by the way, was not going well. A thousand young men were coming home in coffins each month.

His party escalated the involvement in the war in Vietnam and he paid a political price for it.
