Why is my home electrical circuit acting up?

I just received an old AC unit from a friend. It was working fine at their residence. When I plugged it in and turned it on, it started acting strange and not staying on when it should. Also, every time the compressor kicks on, anything else on the circuit shuts off for a second. I moved it to its own, dedicated... show more I just received an old AC unit from a friend. It was working fine at their residence. When I plugged it in and turned it on, it started acting strange and not staying on when it should. Also, every time the compressor kicks on, anything else on the circuit shuts off for a second. I moved it to its own, dedicated circuit...and it still isn't working right. I have checked the breaker and it is rated for 50 amps, so I would assume that isn't an issue. Any guesses on what could be the issue?
