Length: 3W

Width: W

To find the perimeter of a rectangle, double the length and the width. This gives you 6W+2W, or 8W.

Set this equal to the perimeter of 96 inches: 8W=96

Simplify to get W=12. Plug this back into the formula for the length, or 3W to get 36 inches.

2W + 2L = 96

3W = L so 2W +2(3W) = 96 so 8W = 96 so W = 12 and L = W*3 or 36

What step was confusing? I took algebra over 50 years ago.
