What happened to Joey Votto?
.226 batting average, 177 AB so far this season, 40 hits and only 4 home runs... what do you think happened to him?

We're finally seeing the real Joey Votto.

Being the best player on a bad team has finally taken a toll on him.
He started to slide last year when he had just 3 homers and 17 RBI in 47 post-ASB games and it's continued this season. Part of the problem may be David Bell trying him in the leadoff spot: Votto is just 10 for 60 batting 1st in his career and 9 for 56 this season.
But the biggest issue is that he's an older player with a big contract. He's going to collect $25,000,000 a year for the next 4+ years regardless of how much he stinks.

Power hitters don't age gracefully. Unless you're Big Hurt that is.

He actually started declining somewhat last season. At almost 36, he is reaching the downside of his career.

He is in a slump, and he is also getting older and his skills may be declining.
