Many rodents can work into school schedules mainly for their nocturnal nature. They will be demanding of some of your time if you can work that into your lifestyle and hours.
Simply put, all rodents smell, but you stay on top of cage cleaning and such, hardly offensive.
Hamsters clean and groom themselves and really like a sand bath now and then.
It is urine smells that can get strong after a few days, changing bedding in their hides and where they pee most at least every 3 days will generally keep odors down. Don't leave perishable foods more than a day, that can even attract gnats and flies.
Use best judgement if they will meet your schedule and lifestyle.
My single male mouse would wake about the time I got home from school, then spent the rest of the evening with me or exploring my room, playing and such until I went to bed, then had a roomy cage loaded with amenities for his enrichment.
