What kind of fruit tree is this?

We recently moved to southwest Virginia and noticed this tree bearing fruit. We were curious to try the fruit but wanted to make sure it was safe before proceeding.

Any information is much appreciated! Thanks in advanced!

Those are cherries, the tart ones I think, they should be safe to eat if the skin in not broken.

take a small branch with fruit and leaves on it to your local garden center. they will be able to identify it.

look remarkably like cherries may or may not be fit to eat. I'd leave to birds to be safe. Only cultivated varieties are worth eating.

Definitely compare leaves to cherry leaves to identify for yourself
