What is the mechanism through which CPR stimulates pulmonary diffusion during cardiac arrest?

My previous assumption was that there would be a cessation of diffusion during the arrest state; yet, if this was the case then CPR would be ineffectual.

My guess is that the increase in partial pressure of pulmonary oxygen following ventilation stimulates bonding of oxygen to hemoglobin.
