What is "Nana" in the text below?
When I was little, Nana treated me like a princess and carried me everywhere, told me to “be careful” all the time.

Probably her grandmother, but it is also possible 'Nana' was a 'nanny' - a house servant whose job was to look after the children.

diminutive for grandmother. my sister insisted on her grandchildren calling her Nana because she thought grandmother or similar implied that she was old ... which she didn't want to admit.

Grand mother. Apparently in Catholic households a grandmother is often called Nana. I learned this relatively recently.

Nothing to do with being Catholic. I've known a number of people who called one of their grandmothers Nana & none have ever been Catholic! More commonly, kids distinguish paternal & maternal grandmothers with different names, e.g. Nana for one, something else for the other.
