What causes extreme tooth pain besides cavities?

Sometimes it feels like someone is shoving a screw driver through my jaw, but I don't have ANY cavities. what could this be??

Infections of the roots is another cause. Gum disease is also serious.

Gum infection. A dentist can check that if you tell them you have pain. I once had tooth pain from chewing too much gum! I quit smoking a while ago and had to chew gum all the time. Luckily I cut down and the teeth stopped hurting.
