There are cheap solid state modeling amps that will mimic the sounds of a particular amplifier. Google 'modeling amp' and 'Marshall'.
One name you may see is Behringer. I'm always looking for things on my local Craigslist that I can do a fast flip on eBay if the price is right. And just yesterday, someone had a cheap Indonesian Squier Strat and a Behringer Vintager GM110 modeling amp - the Vintager is a much older model than what Behringer makes today.
In researching the Vintager, I came across a discussion forum thread about the sounds you can get out of one, and Marshall was mentioned. But whether the classic British Marshall tones and what you're looking for are anywhere close to the same isn't something I can answer.
So look for cheap modeling amps and read anything you can find out about them before you spend anything.
BTW, the guy wanted $60 for the guitar and the amp, which is actually a great deal for a beginner player (with a strap and cords thrown in), but not enough meat left on the bone for me to re-sell them.
