In Cooking, What can you substitute Cognac with?

One recipe (A fruit cake) had 3.5oz Cognac to get a more "spicier" holiday flavor. It's a bit too expensive for me to use it to experiment recipes so what can you substitute it with?
Update: Dried Figs, Raisin and Nuts was within the recipe. It did taste good without it, but found it a bit plain and nutty.
Update 2: It's my parent's Cognac (I'm not a teen but still live at home) and I don't really drink alcohol except for cocktails.
