Is it really that hard to parent and raise kids and discipline them or are people just overthinking it?

Yes, but it's the hardest job you'll ever love

It's not that hard if you set boundaries for them. For example if your child wants to do something dangerous ( such as jumping off a trampoline) then tell them no and explain why you said no. If your child is damaging someone's property then make them work in order to pay for whatever they destroyed. If your child unintentionally says something that's not very nice, explain that what they said wasn't very nice and why It's not very nice and make them sincerely apologize. If they say something that they know isn't very nice take something away and make them sincerely apologize. If they behave in a way that's disrespectful, explain to them that you don't appreciate being treated like that and explain what consequences they'll get if they continue. For example the consequences can be anything such as not being able to go to their favorite attraction such as swimming pools or bowling alleys or not getting something that you promised them but this needs to be a consequence they care about.

Somehow the human race has raised children in various styles over the last 200,ooo years and more.

It can be challenging at times, but it's not that hard if you are comfortable setting boundaries. Children crave routines and stability, and they need consistency from their parents. It's okay to teach them that adults have more responsibilities and more maturity, so therefore the adults are in charge and get to make the rules.

Every child is different and every parent will have different challenges with the discipline of their particular child.

Some children naturally want to please other people. They want people around them to be happy with them. These kinds of children are easy to discipline because they want you to be happy with them and they will mostly try to do what is right.

Other children don't care. They want self satisfaction and they don't care if it makes other people unhappy. These are the kinds of children that are more likely to become bullies to other children. These are the kinds of children that are more likely to sneak out of the house or steal from their parents as teens. These are the children that are a challenge to discipline.

No matter which discipline technique a parent has picked - they need to be consistent. If a parent tells a child to stop doing something or a certain discipline will happen - then it needs to happen or nothing changes. Many parents are always giving empty threats. "Stop that or else" doesn't work if "or else" never happens.

Its always easy from the cheap seats. But when you are actually at it everyday it can be hard, especially with the first one because half the time you think you think you are making mistakes left and right caring for them and discover that disciplining your child often serves to punish yourself in the process.

It's entirely doable, but it's a massive commitment of time and effort.

The hard part is if you have multiple kids, the same thing doesn't work for them all.
