Never was one, but both my wife and son are/were lawyers. My wife was a corporate lawyer (a VP in fact) and my son is the managing lawyer in a law firm.
For both the days and hours were/are long (my wife no longer practices). So there was little time for family and recreation over long periods of time.
And there is frequent travel, sometimes overseas (e.g., England and Germany). So they often missed special events like birthdays and holidays with the families. And while away, they lived in hotels and rarely unpacked to live out of their suitcases. And they did not get time off to actually enjoy the sights overseas.
My son's clients are just on this side of the law (most of the time). So there are some shady clients who are threatening just by their presence. And on occasions getting them to pay their lawyer fees is an issue.
On the flip side, both my wife and son enjoyed the challenge of the law. It's the challenge of critical thinking, trying to outfox the opposition in a case or project. And the rush of winning a case or finishing a project is what they loved.
....and the pay ain't bad either.
