How to clean an outboard starter pull cord assembly?
I have an old mercury outboard engine and the Spring is very strong. It works great when I have it coated in brake cleaner but just a few moments later after it dries it starts getting stuck again. What do I need to lube in with to keep it from sticking?

Brake cleaner will dissolve any lubricant.
You need a lubricant, not a cleaner.

Use a dry lubricant- Graphite lock spray works well.

Don't use WD-40 to lubricate stuff. Wd-40 is great to disperse moisture but it attracts dirt and eventually gums up the works. Instead Buy Silicone spray lube. It goes on wet but dries to a film that provides lubrication and doesn't attract dirt.

Spray it liberally with WD40. The brake cleaner cleans but does not lubricate. WD40 is magic stuff for all marine jobs especially spark plug leads and associated electrics.
