    It is an infrared receiver for components that cannot be within line of sight of the remote control.

    It might be an IR (infared) emitter. It would connect to a special IR output jack on a AV system automation unit. If that is what it is it is basically worthless unless you still have the system.

    Ir sensor. It plugs into an ir port in the back of a tv and enables you to use your remote control without having to point it directly to the t.v..

    Looks like part of an infrared remote repeater system,

    either a sensor or a "blaster".

    I also think it's an infrared receiver.

    I think it might have been for Windows Media Center, and was used in conjunction with a media center remote control.
