It is thought to have started in India, where it was called Chaturanga. It then spread west to Persia where it became Shatranj. But it also spread east, giving rise to the eastern forms of chess such as Xiang-Qi (China), Chang-Gi (Korea) and Shogi (Japan).

Some Chinese claim that theirs was the oldest form of chess, but there is no proof of this claim. And Chinese Chess contains two pieces called cannons (also found in Korean Chess) which don't exist in western forms of chess.

Probably Persia - now known as Iran. "Checkmate" comes from "shakmat", a Farsi word.
