Dan Quayle is a former Vice President of the United States. Quayle was a politician from Indiana, serving in the House and Senate since the late 70s. In 1988, Ronald Reagan's Vice President, George HW Bush was running for president. One of the criticisms of Bush was that he was too old. Although Bush was only 64 in 1988, a few years younger than Reagan had been when he was inaugurated, Bush seemed more like an old man than Reagan did. In part to combat this perception, Bush chose Quayle, who was in his early 40s, as his running mate. The decision was somewhat controversial. While it may seem funny to think of now, when inexperienced people are running for president, Quayle was seen by many in the media as perhaps too young an inexperienced. In the 1988 Vice Presidential debates, against Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Quayle was subjected to one of the greatest political burns in all of history. To combat the impression that he was inexperienced, Quayle had several times compared his length of service to that of John F Kennedy, who had just one more year in Congress than Quayle did. During the debate Bentsen referenced this and said "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senators, you're no Jack Kennedy". Although it was a huge applause line at the debate and became an immortal part of political lore, it didn't help Bentsen, and the Democratic Presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, win the election. Bush and Quayle won in a landslide. But the impression of Quayle as an inexperienced "kid" lacking in intellectual heft stuck with him throughout his time as VP. Quayle didn't help matters with a series of gaffes which his critics exploited to make him look foolish. One was a speech he gave on the perceived moral decay in society. One topic he referred to in the speech was Murphy Brown, a popular sitcom about a brash female reporter. The show had recently started a plotline where the unmarried Murphy became pregnant and decided to become a mother despite not wanting a relationship with the baby's father. Quayle accused the sitcom of "mocking the importance of fathers" and traditional families. Quayle received criticism for the speech from various liberal and feminist groups and many people saw it as odd that he would take on a fictional tv show. Murphy Brown itself worked the speech into their next season, taking advantage of the fact that the text of Quayle's speech gave no indication that Brown was a fictional character. Another gaffe forever associated with Quayle was when he was attending an education event at a school. After a child wrote the word "potato" on the blackboard, Quayle corrected him by adding an E to the end, which is incorrect. He received widespread ridicule from people who argued that he didn't know how to spell a common word like potato. Quayle's excuse, that he was relying on cards provided him by the school, didn't exactly inspire confidence.

Despite having won in a landslide in 1988, Quayle and Bush faced a tough reelection fight in 1992, with charismatic southern governor Bill Clinton heading up the Democratic ticket and billionaire Ross Perot running a surprisingly popular third party campaign. In the end, Bush-Quayle lost the election handily, in part because Perot got almost 20% of the popular vote. Quayle made a half hearted effort to run for president in the 2000 election, but he dropped out after polls showed him in 8th place.
