folks used a sears ( RCA) portable,w the flipper stylus for 78 rpm records
they listened to chopin,,herb alpert, christmas carols etc for about 11 years,
I bought a more modern panasonic lil black vinyl unit,w tapes ( 50) for the cassette recorder on board, the main unit produced hi fi they had never heard outside of live concerts of the 40s
I upgraded with a pair of utah 3way home assembled speakers in cabinets
w a mag cartridge & new turntable,,,,put on the same records,,they were open mouthed listening to the current standards of hi fi.
modern systems with baffles for reinforced bass,,overall they can be much smaller but make quite a large sound, what matters is the amount of air the device can move,,move accurately according to the performance track laid down, small can often = or better the big box enclosures
