I'm trying to learn about the American culture?

High costs of living and high rents- in Los Angeles and other places in California, lifelong residents have resorted to living in tents. Many are senior citizens.

Financial ruin- foreclosures, bankruptcies, evictions, these prevent one from either renting or owning a home.

In the 80s, President Reagan created controversy by stating that many homeless choose to be homeless; if you call living on the street as preferable to dangerous and overcrowded shelters, then you might say so- but nobody truly wants to live on the street.

Mental illness does play a role. Many people with mental illness do not have a stable income and living in a normal domestic arrangement does not work for them. America has a long history of horrific treatment of the mentally ill, essentially warehousing them in huge "hospitals." A more recent trend is placement in group homes and other supervised living.

Drug and alcohol addiction. A large percentage of homeless are drug addicts or alcoholic. The high cost of supporting a drug habit means no money for other things- such as rent or a mortgage.

Criminal convictions and prison time: not only does a criminal history make it difficult to get a job, yet alone a good-paying job, it also prevents one from renting or obtaining a mortgage on a home. Most landlords and banks will not deal with ex-cons.

PS: Adjustment to civilian life following military service has created a homeless population of military veterans- but be aware, there are enormous numbers of what are now called "Stolen Valor" fakes who claim to be veterans but are not- unfortunately, there is a good possibility a panhandler who claims to be a vet is simply trying to con you by gaining your sympathy. (A few basic military-knowledge questions such as MOS, DD-214, where were you stationed, etc., usually stumps them: great example- a man facing assault charges told a judge he was a Navy SEAL; the judge asked him, where'd you train? He said Subic Bay! The judge had been in the Navy and knew the one place SEALs train- Coronado in San Diego, and the fake couldn't even get that right).

Some psychopaths are unwilling to work because they have an instinct to avoid working a lower class job.

Losing a job, not paying the rent and being evicted, home or apartment is destroyed by fire or natural disaster, not having insurance.

All lyou have to do is look at your own homless and see why they became homeless. Then use that information to see how those in America become homeless. The problem of homeless is in every nation, and the reasons are basically the same.

    Greed and selfishness.

Use to be homeless people had a stereotype of no family for support. Not disowned by family. Because of whatever reason. Both families. Families they come from and the family they made.

Glad my family I come from isn't like this. Weren't raised to turn backs on family.

I have and will do it again.

I will go to the streets before mom will. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES.

    Death before dishonor.

We export our billions of dollars in taxes as tribute to the Muslim Overlords in Saudi and Pakistan instead of helping, medicating, housing or educating Americans. Simple!

A class system that "does not exist" and not having social welfare programs because the word social is too close to socialism which is a trigger.

The biggest cause of Americans going Bankrupt and then possibly homeless is having a chronic medical condition. Their absolutely rubbish health care system is fully private and they also dont subsidise the costs of medications so a lot of people get prescribed medication which they dont then purchase because of the cost involved. In sensible countries like Australia there is a thing called the Pharmaceutical benefits scheme. The average cost of a prescription would be less than $10.

Medical bills, Americans on social assistance get health care-people who work for a living maybe not.
