My husband accidentally put about 1 cup of 5w20 oil in the transmission of our 2007 Chrysler town & country. Can it be driven?

No harm done. It's just a lubricant. The trans holds about 12 to 13 quarts, so a little motor oil like a cup full means little to nothing to the trans and will just mix with the existing oil. There is a lot of trans chemical additives on the market. If you can add them to your trans, why not a little motor oil?

Tell your husband to take off the pan to drain it & replace the tran filter. Then refill it with the proper fluid.

Why many cars have "sealed" transmissions these days.....

How does someone "accidentally" do that? If they were both easy access, or right next to each other, it would still be pretty unlikely. But access to the transmission means you need a funnel to pour the liquid down a long tube. Did he think he was adding transmission fluid? Anyway, to answer your question, I would get it flushed.

1 cup is more than likely not going to do any damage. But to make sure I would have the transmission fluid changed. Especially on a 12 year old car.

Yes. You can drive it to your service shop and they will drain, flush it and, the lines and cooler. Motor oil is not a fix for slipping auto-transmissions.

Interesting. The only way you can find out is to try. However it will need draining asap and refilling. Is there something wrong with hubby?
