I sometimes call the universe God, eternal energy, but only because it's everything, forever, including everyone, good and bad, endless, no beginning, no end. It isn't the same definition of Christians, at all. Einstein had the same sort of definition of the word, wrote books about it, and got death threats for trying to gain some rationality. I'm not religious, religion is stupid. Zen Buddhism makes the most sense to me, because it doesn't really put itself in a box, the whole idea is trying to see the world from another perspective, other than your own, or that of someone else, but everyone, the big picture. It's hard to say if individuality is an illusion, but our fate is inherently connected to the thing that we are all made out of, which cannot be created or destroyed, it only changes form.
