Sudden incapacitating illness (stroke, heart attack).

How do you know it was an accident? It's possible it was on purpose.

Typically at that hour, being tired, alcohol, and/or trying to avoid an animal would be likely possibilities.

idiot texting, or talking on the cell phone, drunk driving, or on drugs

Alcohol/drugs always comes first in mind. That said, people shouldn't be quick to dismiss other factors such as fatigue, or a medical emergency like blood sugar issues or a seizure.

Driver fell asleep. Drunks usually stack up earlier in the night.
