Is it true that nowadays dogs are descended from grey wolves?

Yes. But the lineage is far thinned out. Which is why we have a plethora of breeds. Though it is true, it is MINIMAL at this point.

Not all dogs no; not from the Grey Wolf soley. though the majority Yes and Grey Wolves descended from Direwolves Which are now extinct. Also one of the most closely related Dogs on earth today too Wolves believe it or not is the Pekingese Though its direct ancestor is the tiny Asiatic Red Wolf not the American Grey Wolf. though the Asisatic Red Wolf will soon be extinct also, more the pity. The largest Wolf on Earth today is the Arctic or White Wolf. yet another type of Wolf that is becoming slowly but surely extinct due to being drastically over hunted for its coat in the recent past.. Australias Dingo as also quite recently been D.n.a.confirmed as another descendant of the tiny Asiatic Red Wolf.Source(s): Local Wolfwatch member; Tracker; and Shepherd:
