Past tense, Luke; "the Son of God bore the punishment for sin". Once, for all time, the wrath of God was poured over Christ on the cross, like a ton of sewage being dumped on the sinless One, because of our sin.
The only people who become Christians are those whom the Holy Spirit convicts of their sin. That conviction leads them to see just who it was dying for their sin, and they are filled with anguish. They repent of their sin and trust in what Jesus did to deliver them from the wrath of God. They are cleansed from their sin and delivered from their slavery to sin. They rejoice in freedom to now walk in the opposite direction of sin. They loath sin and get the Holy Spirit's enabling to resist temptation to sin. They become new people in Christ.
Those who want to sin don't like Christianity. And they often give themselves away by claiming that Christians think they have a free pass to sin. No. They do not. They have come to hate sin because they have come to love the One who died because they sinned.
