Is it true that the French language was a symbol of civilization in the past?

    It still is. All language is. Language itself is symbolic of civilization, an oral and aural representation of civilization conceptually.

    Before WW2, it was THE language that had "prestige". All royals spoke it

    At one time, French was the international language of diplomacy. I understand that it is now English, because so few Americans could speak french.
