I’ve done it. I started using online social forums/games since I was about 10 and I’m 20 now. There are people that I’ve met here on yahoo answers when I joined in 2012 that I’m still connected with. Some just transitioned from Y!A to more personal platforms. We’ve seen each other’s faces, heard each other voices, etc.
Yes, practice common sense on the internet and don’t reveal certain information, but online friendships are just a different type of friendship. They’re virtual, but they’re still real. It’s interesting to me how I practically spent my teenage years virtually growing up with someone. We were both 15 when we met on Y!A and now we’re both in college, going on 21, have somewhat similar majors, etc. I can understand the skepticism people have about it, but it boils down to how much sense you have and how trusting you are. I learned the balance of how to hone online friendships while staying fairly anonymous.
Try. It might be interesting for you.
