    It's a play on 2 traditional sayings.

    1) No good deed goes unrewarded.

    2) No sin goes unpunished.

It means that, in the act of doing a good deed, the doer of the good deed often has trouble come his/her way as a result of that action.

so true. there's so many but the one that comes to mind right now is when i took my neighbor's dog to the vet - with their permission, but they insisted there was nothing wrong with it. well there was and i paid the $75 bill *and* the dog threw up in the front floorboard of my truck. lol

It's when someone does something good to help and it backfires on them. Like if you lend someone money and they never pay it back, for example.

The true meaning is sarcastic. The phrase is used when someone does a good deed, and they aren't rewarded or thanked for it, or it turns out badly.
