Development is a fool's game. In college years ago, my professors, of both parties, droned on about economic development. I took a lot of internation relations courses- political science major. Development solves problems. Lets governments collect tax revenue and spend on infrastructure and more development projects. The problem we see now, besides the glaringly obvious problem of toxic pollution and climate change encouraged by the industrialized all over the globe, is that there is never enough development to satisfy people. We need ever newer technology, more and more jobs, more sources of revenue. Never enough. Rising economies compete with older economies. Nobody can come out ahead without destroying the other. People left the "primitive boring" farm life for city jobs. As the population exploded, more jobs are necessary. And they never seem to pay enough. And never enough jobs. In the Middle East, most youth are unemployed. It is unsustainable. But most people won't accept.
