How many steps (equations) would you use to determine the amount of energy needed to bring ice from -35 C to +70 C?

I would try boiling.

Three

1st step is the warming(energy) of ice to its melting point.

2nd step is the change of state from solid to liquid thi requires energy without a change of temp.

3rd. step is the warming(energy) of water to 70oC

All three have different specific energies.

1. ice -35 to ice 0 = m * C₁ * 35

2. ice 0 to water 0 = m * L

3. water 0 to water 70 = m * C₂ * 70

C₁: specific heat capacity of ice

C₂ specific heat capacity of water

2. You need to know newtons law of cooling and the latent heat of transformation which accounts for the phase change from ice to liquid. (Assuming generic high school or college level problem)

Bogus. There is no ice at +70 C, assuming standard pressure
