Because we are creatures of the sun. Would YOU really like it if there was one time zone and per that time zone you had to get up after sunset, work your eight yours, go home in the dark and when you finally get tired and go to bed the sun is just coming up? The time zones allow pretty much maximum sun for each of us.

3 hours in 4 time zones.

Local times in the 19th Century and before were aligned with the sun's motion. They were kept in cities and towns everywhere. Time zones were created to avoid confusing schedules and possible deaths on east-west rail lines in the USA.

4 hours. Large countries like the USA, Brazil, China, Canada, Russia have different time zones so the sun doesn't do things like come up at 3 am on one side of the coountry and 7 am on the other.

4 zones, EST 12, CST 1, MST 2, PST 3. So PST is 3 hours behind.
China has one official time zone--Beijing's.

We have time zones because the sun, traveling from east to west, is overhead at different times in differing locations - specially, noon in San Francisco is 3 PM in New York. So, while it might make your life easier, it would make it more difficult for 3/4 of the people in this country to be forced to work on your schedule.

When it's 10 pm in the east, full dark no matter the time of year, it's 9 central, 8 mountain, and 7 pacific time--still full daylight.

Having that all be in a single time zone makes little sense.

Likewise, when it's 7 am in the east, a perfectly reasonable time to get up, getting light about half the year or fully light for a quarter of the year, it's still full dark 4 am on the west coast--and it won't be light out for hours.
