Are presidential debates actually more informing than every candidate elaborating on their official position on every major issue online?

They are rehearsed and contrived. Remember in 2016 CNN gave Hilary the questions in advance, so she could prepare and win?

Because they're not written by a committee using focus groups. You get an idea of how well they prepare for things and think on their feet.

Perhaps they are more articulate in writing... being able to answer questions on the fly doesn’t make you any more honest, just crafty.

    Usually not at all.

Of all the presidential candidate debates I have seen over the decades, only the Trump-Clinton debates were informative or even interesting.
