Why Canada has a lower rate of homicides compared to America?

Canada population is 36 million and has about 600 murders per year

The city of Chicago population is under 3 million, with anywhere from 600-700 homicides per year.

anybody who has traveled to Canada knows it is a far less brutal and considerably more compassionate place than here, as are many European countries. If you read a lot of the questions and responses on here, and compare them to those posted by other nationalities, it comes across how f'd up this country is. Anybody who has traveled to the countries i mentioned knows this. Don't come to America looking for compassion. Especially not under Trump, who criticized George Bush, Sr. for advocating for a "kinder, gentler America". Trump and his followers think compassion is for "snowflakes". That's why this country has become almost unlivable now. The bullying macho, "zero sum game" mentality where it's "weak" to help the downtrodden and there is only winning and losing, but no cooperating. MAGA. That's why the rest of the world has currently written us off as flaky and unstable, like the President.

Murderers are not inspired by Donald Trump. Don't blame him for crime. It was already well estanlished in USA before he was born.

      Criminals need harsher handling. Period.

The truth is there is less drug trade. A vast majority of crimes are in some way tied to the drug trade.

Canada just can't keep up with US. Oh, they club seals and seal pups to death up there and CALL it "murder" but really, they have NO idea.

Most homicide and violent crime in the US is related to inner city gangs. The US has a gang culture, Canada does not. In fact, Canada is pretty harsh on gang activity.

They also don’t share a border with the biggest homicide rate country in the world.

Mexico isn't even close to having the highest homicide rate on Earth. While it is high (19.26 per 100K), it's FAR from the highest. U.S. (5.35) may have some influence from that, just as Canada (1.68) may have from proximity to the U.S.

I'm guessing that Canada doesn't have large lawless mobs in the inner cities with corrupt liberal politicians who do nothing than make it worse.

Canada doesn't have desperate poverty. It doesn't have whole groups of people who've been deliberately kept in 2nd-class citizenship for hundreds of years. It has proper gun control (you can still GET a gun, but there are restrictions). Canada is more egalitarian and pluralistic than the US.

@Joseph B - certainly more visible crime - think of all those bank robbers they celebrated.
