In contrast to our judicial system, colleges are not bound by due process. They don't have find the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, they don't have provide a right of discovery and they don't have to allow the accused the opportunity to face their accuser. Colleges are able to find guilt and issue punishment with no actual proof of wrong doing and and without the accused even knowing the details of accusation against them, something our legal system can't do.
Victims are of course still able to press charges through the normal judicial system. The college system basically allows guilt and punishment to be issued in low merit cases.
My personal view is this is a mistake. College security forces typically can't collect evidence, issue subpoenas, etc. to properly investigate such alleged crimes and those accused of such crimes deserve due process, not some college kangaroo court.
