A thin but dull table knife should be able to pry up the stainless steel back. You may have to look carefully to find the right place. Or, take it to a jewelry shop or battery store, but they'll charge you 10 times as much for the battery as from a dollar store.

Take it to a watch shop and they will do it for you.

You must pry it off with a small screwdriver or knife, something with a VERY thin edge. There might be small notch, or maybe not. It's not always easy or fast. Then putting it back on can also be challenging. Sometimes it simply snaps back on; sometimes it takes a lot of pressure evenly applied over the whole back (I've used a pill bottle before).

Gently, with a tiny screwdriver. Usually there's an indentation somewhere along the edge to pry it up.
