What is considered a dependent for fasfa?

I make about $30,000 a year and I'm 20 and live with my mom only pay $200 rent a month to her if I were to go to college am I able to claim that I'm a dependent on federal student aid? I think somewhere it says if a person is under 24 and going to college they can claim as dependent for fasfa.

You are your mother's dependent at this time.

You must file as a dependent student for FAFSA purposes. Note: (This is NOT necessarily the same as a dependent for IRS purposes.)

You must include your income and assets, AND your mother's income and assets, when you complete the FAFSA.

Dependency on the FAFSA is determined by a series of questions on the application: are you over 24, married, supporting your own dependent, in the military etc. If you can't answer yes to one of those questions, then you are considered a dependent and must provide parent information on the FAFSA.

When you fill out your FAFSA form, you will be asked questions that they will use to determine if you are a dependent.

You don't claim it, they figure it out.
