How long should my wire be?

So for my science class, I m making a small version of a windmill using a DC Motor and a LED bulb. The DC Motor is 12 volts and has 6000 RPM. The LED bulb is 20mA 2-2.2 volts. (I also have 20mA 3-3.2 volts in case I needed a more powerful bulb). So far, I got the windmill to spin, but neither of the bulbs are working. I have an almost 3 foot wire hooked up to it. Is the wire possibly too long for the electrical current to run to the bulb? Would anyone know how long it would have to be? Or do I just not have enough information for that?
