Think as many moves ahead as you can, and watch what your opponent is doing just as closely as what you are doing yourself. All it takes is to know how to take advantage of your opponents' mistakes, and if your opponent isn't making mistakes, use distraction and trick your opponent into making them. Learn some of the major tactics in chess, like the Knight fork and "Discovery" attack.

Find a book that covers the basic moves, tactics, and strategies. Study it. Play lots of people. Then, you will understand books that discuss intermediate tactics and strategies. Study them and try to apply what you learn while playing lots of people. Study the games you have played. Why did you lose? Why did you win? What mistakes were made? Go online and work on tactics and puzzles. Play more people. Play people that are better than you. Study books that cover advanced chess topics. Look for master level people and play them. Eventually, you will be able to beat more than 95% of chess players. It won't happen overnight, though, and you won't find any easy answers.
