air conditioner wont turn on?

I got a 2001 subaru outback for super cheap, but the ac wont work. I press the button, and the light comes on, but the compressor never engages. Any suggestions?

Update:

I would take it to a shop, but i only payed $700 dollars for the car, and i really don't want to put any more $ into it. I'm just wondering if there was an alternative way to fix it.

Do a sexy dance in front of it.

It is out of "Freon". No gas pressure in the system shuts it down.

I own 3 vehicles that old (or almost that old) and all 3 of them have perfectly functional Air Conditioning.

Either the compressor is shot or you are low on Freon.

Put a can of 134a with sealant into the AC system.

The ac works off gas (freon) perhaps it needs recharging ,

Sounds like you need a new compressor, or there's some connection loose.

Take it to an a/c shop.
