Because the wine had rum out. Please read 2:1-11 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. 6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. 7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the wawter that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. This was Jesus first miracle.

He was friends with the people giving the wedding party and it was the social thing to do to serve wine. So to safe them from embarrassment he turned water into wine. But it says he was waiting to preach 40 months. So his time to preach was not yet. He fasted for 40 days, then preached 40 months and then showed himself to the apostles for 40 days after his resurrection. The bible always does things in three time periods of 40. From Moses to the promise land. He took 40 years in Egypt, 40 years as a Shepard and 40 years wondering in the wilderness. Saul ruled for 40, then David was 40 years then Solomon 40 years then the nation broke apart. But it was established in a 40 year periods. Notice everything in the bible is divided into 40 year periods. Rained 40 days and 40 nights.

It was a practical necessity, at the time, as well as a great gift. It also fulfilled the demands of the law/commandments, which requires one to "honor thy mother and thy father".Source(s): www.askmeaboutgod.org

The stories right in the Bible they attended a marriage festival and they ran out of wine so Jesus made some more. In doing so Jesus showed that there's a Time to drink wine and be happy!

First because his mother asked him to do so, and second to prove he could.

at a wedding Jesus was attending
they ran out of wine (probably a severe loss of face for whoever was paying for the wedding)
and Jesus' mother, Mary, asked Jesus to help out.
So: it's because Mary asked Jesus to help.
