The one's that require a gratuity. In California, Many restaurants in places like Del Mar, San Diego, San Francisco, Napa Valley REQUIRE a 20% tip on all meals, no matter if you are single cover or not. Some places like Monterey, Carmel, Sacramento require a 20% tip on parties of 6 or more. IMO All are a couple notches above a bob's big boy or are tourist traps; I'd say on the level of a Wolfgang Pucks. Puff Pretention, I call it. Like a marshmallow. When I went to Bubba Gump Shrimp shortly after the movie was launched it was 20% tip for 4 or more (worst experience at a restaurant in my 60 years) I refused to pay the tip and did not. BGS aside, for the most part the wait staff at these places is typically okay at their job but arrogant and ghost-like. Since the tip is guaranteed and the owner will call police if not paid. I have seen it happen, with me at BGS. They have no incentive but to hand you a plate and walk away.....never to be seen or heard from again, until they bring you the check and tip demand. sadly they don't advertise the mandatory tip. You are typically not aware until you have a seat.
