The government of the United States plays a larger role in the narcotics industry than all the drug suppliers and drug dealers around the world. They're just looking after their own interests. The unfathomable, ludicrous, obscene amount of money to be made from the production, distribution and sale of drugs was never something that the US was about to pass up. No entity has more of a stake in the game of international drug trafficking and sales than the US government and nobody makes anywhere near as much profit from it. The United States is bordered on either side by a vast ocean, yet drugs are a bigger problem in the United States than practically any other industrialised country. The United States has the largest navy, largest coast guard, and one of the largest numbers of port facility personnel in the world, yet billions of dollars worth of drugs manage to get through. It's not ineptitude on their part, it's all going according to plan.
