Upstate NY; not NYC.
I used to live in FL. Lived there more than three years. Did not like it because I did not like the southern mentality that pervaded where I lived...not far from Alabama. They were prejudiced, they were slow, and they were terrible cooks (deep fried everything).
Never lived in NY but spent several months in NYC. Went to flight training school at La Guardia for several weeks at one time. And went there for vacation more than a few times.
I found NYC a great vacation place if you were well healed (rich). In which case, you could nob nob in the nicer places. Otherwise, it was dirty, noisy, crowded, and often rude.
Never lived in upstate NY, but my daughter in law worked there. She loved the area and the people. And if you wanted to enjoy the richness (pun intended) of NYC you can always take a commuter train into the city.
