    Physicist Stephen Hawking expressed concern that life on Earth is at risk from a sudden nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus, global warming, or other dangers humans have not yet thought of. Hawking has stated: “I regard it as almost inevitable that either a nuclear confrontation or environmental catastrophe will cripple the Earth at some point in the next 1,000 years”, and has considered an "asteroid collision" to be the biggest threat to the planet.

    Age. You DO know most species "die out" (or evolve) in a relatively short time, right? (Humans have been around for 2 million years.)

    Stupidity, apparently. Too stupid to stop poisoning the planet and too stupid to curtail war.

    A few nuclear capable countries pressing launch. A big Meteor hit. A pandemic that spreads so fast that it can't be stopped. For different reasons I think a few would live in any scenerio.

    Ourselves. Humans and our ancestors have caused numerous extinctions, some severe enough to have been labeled as a mass extinction. It was only a matter of time until humans, aka homo sapien, started putting their own species' survival at stake. We will cause Earth to become less friendly in terms of habitability. The process has already begun. The first sign that is too late will be when aquatic and marine creatures begin to die off or move to new territories throughout the world due to their original home-waters changing in temperature. Signs of this has actually already occurred. Orcas for example go further north and it has introduced competition for polar bears over food. Once deep sea creatures show changes in lifestyle we are truly ******.

    Some of the most likely extinction events:

    * A large comet hitting the earth

    * A global incurable epidemic

    * Global nuclear war
