An airplane travels 3240 miles in 4.5 hours with the aid of a tail wind. It takes 5 hours for the return trip, flying against the same wind. Find the speed of the airplane in the still wind, and the speed of the wind. Airplane speed:

a + w = 3240/4.5 = 720 mph

a - w = 3240/5 = 648 mph

2a = 1368

a = 684 mph

w = 720-684 = 36 mph

Ans:

Aircraft Airspeed = 684 mph

Wind speed = 36 mph

3240/(p + w) = 4.5

3240/(p - w) = 5

4.5(p + w) = 5(p - w)

0.5p = 9.5w

4,5x + 4.5w = 3240

5x - 5w = 3240

45x + 45w = 32400

45x - 45w = 29160

x = 684 mph_____speed in still air

5 x 684 - 5W = 3240

3420 - 3240 = 5W

180 = 5W

W = 36 mph______wind speed
