There was a time from 1991 till the turn of the 20th century when the Watchtower Society had Non-Government-Organization status with the United Nations. When this was publicised, the excuse they gave was that NGO membership gave them access to the UN's vast library and they used it for research.

However, they quickly gave up their NGO status after non-JWs exposed this for - unarguably - it was total hypocrisy for the organization to say the UN was a satanic 'beast' that God was about to destroy at Armageddon and that JWs must have nothing to do with, when the org. was an NGO member of it!

Stephen Bates, Religious Affairs correspondent of the 'Guardian' uncovered this fiasco, and also wrote about this in the Catholic journal 'The Tablet', 2 Nov 2001 edition. There he explained that, for 80 years, the Wt. Soc. had condemned the League of Nations, then its successor The United Nations as the scarlet-colored 'beast' of Revelation - a disgusting thing in God's eyes. Yet there was the Wt. Soc listed on-line as one of its NGO members! To achieve that, the NGO must agree that it supports the UN charter and that it is prepared to disseminate and publicize the objectives and policies of the U.N. Not once, but every year, this declaration must be sworn to, if NGO status is to be maintained. Therefore, for about 10 years, the Wt. Soc had been lying deceptively, to keep its official contact with the UN going.

Two days after Mr Bates' article appeared in the 'Guardian' newspaper in Britain, the Wt. Soc. disaffiliated from the UN. They issued a statement on headed paper confirming this. Yet elders told dismayed JWs that this was a lie disseminated by apostates. Or, that the UN website had been infiltrated by forgers. The Witnesses' talkboard was abuzz with hundreds of messages, virtually all of them outraged with the elders of the Wt. Soc. One JW said that when he had shown a friend the UN website, he was summoned to a 2 hour judicial hearing with his local elders. He and his wife were subjected to a public reproof in front of the entire congregation at the next JW meeting.

I am copying the above directly from 'The Tablet' magazine referred to, which is in front of me. And I have other first-hand source material backing all of this up. JWs in the 21st century might find it incredulous that their beloved Governing Body would have authorized NGO membership in the UN for 10 years until this was exposed publicly by non JWs, but they need to waken up and realize what sort of things their leaders get up to behind their backs.

Woops, David - a typo on my part. It should have been 'turn of the 21st century', not 20th! Oogy, the reporter is a professional journalist writing for a highly respected British newspaper. You may think the Catholic 'Tablet' is an unreliable source but lots of other sources confirm these facts.

Yes, it was proven hypocrisy of the governing body of Jehovah's witnesses.

And it was only unmasked because there were sincere and honest Jehovah's Witnesses who, upon learning of the facts, CREATED COURAGE and unmasked it. Acts 5 : 29

Hypocrisy seems to be the norm for the JWs

    Because they're prize-winning hypocrites.

Jehovah's Witnesses claim they have nothing to do with politics, and that they want nothing to do with politics. Mind you, that's only until they find political contacts of various kinds to be expedient for them. That's exactly why Watchtower Society leaders attempted to suck up to Hitler in the 1930s.

"In 1992, the Watchtower became an Associate NGO with the United Nations. This was despite spending decades condemning the UN as the scarlet coloured wild beast of Revelation. As a result, many Jehovah's Witnesses severed ties with the Watchtower for what they consider a hypocritical and dishonest chapter of the religion's history.

In 1991, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York applied to be a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Associate Member of the United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI). This is the closest relationship an NGO can form with the United Nations. The application was renewed annually and is a matter of public record.

Watchtower remained an Associate Member until a few days after knowledge of this involvement became public through the release of breaking news in The Guardian on 8th October 2001."

    Documented evidence in my comments.

Jehovah's witnesses as a whole or congregation or his as an individual has nothing to do with the United Nations the watchtower bible and tract society hired a lawyer to represent the interests of religious freedom with the United Nation again they hired a lawyer every major corporation has a lawyer that works for them nothing unusual here. there's a lot of religious persecution that's going on in the world and you have to have a lawyer in the United Nations if you want to get that religious persecution stopped what's strange about that?

We are law abiding. We pay our taxes. We do not incite violence. We try to display kindness and love towards our neighbors. Dangerous? A sect? I don’t think so.
