How can stars live as long as they do?? Why don't they burn up almost immediately?

The energy of the Sun comes from nuclear fusion in which hydrogen atoms combine to form helium and in the process release a tremendous amount of energy.
Oddly, there is not enough pressure in the Sun and other stars of that size to cause the fusion directly. If there were, most of the fusion would occur fairly rapidly as it does in more massive stars, instead of over the billions of years of our Sun's "main sequence".
The fusion in the Sun occurs because of a rare effect called "quantum tunneling". In this process, fusion takes several separate steps to form helium and release energy. Most of the time, during a “between step” the intermediate components merely revert back to hydrogen atoms and no fusion results.
Fusion by quantum tunneling is so rare that far less energy is produced per kilogram of matter in the Sun than heat produced per kilogram in human bodies by chemical means. But the Sun is extremely massive and the total energy production is immense.

they are big. Really big. The reactions do not affect the entire mass, only a small portion of the mass, so it takes a long time.

The purpose of the creation of stars is to decorate the universe with all of them working in unison to proof that the universe is being created by the Intelligent Design who is Omnipotent and Omniscience as we witnesses.

A star made completely of coal would burn out in 6000 years. My guess is that this burning is rapid. In comparison, the sun is hot because of nuclear fusion in its core. For fusion to happen, there must be quantum tunneling which is rare. But when it does happen, immense energy is released. So with fusion, “burning” barely happens. With coal, it rapidly happen. With fusion, immense amount of energy is released. With coal, not so much in comparison to fusion.
