A jet of water squirts out horizontally from a

hole on the side of the tank as shown below.If the hole has a diameter of 3.51 mm , what

is the height of the water above the hole in

the tank?

Answer in units of cm.

height is 1.78 m

distance is .6 m

    Assuming your update applies to the spouting water, then the time it takes to fall is

    t = √(2s / g) = √(2 * 1.78m / 9.8m/s²) = 0.60 s

    and so the horizontal velocity is

    v = x / t = 0.6m / 0.60s = 1.0 m/s

    For the height above the hole,

    v² = 2gh

    h = v² / 2g = (1.0m/s)² / 19.6m/s² = 0.051 m = 5.1 cm
