That would be the Big Three of metal: Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin.

NOTE: None of those bands identified as heavy metal. They called themselves rock & roll bands, and they were right. For the record, Motorhead, Alice Cooper, Kiss, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, The Nuge, Van Halen, and Blue Oyster never called themselves heavy metal either. People just called them that, and nobody argued because heavy metal is just a flavour of rock & roll.

There are parts that make metal metal.

Put distortion on Bluegrass and that could be considered metal.

Dolly Parton played her guitar in drop D which is a tuning favored in metal.

There is a video of a guy tapping his guitar fast that's in black and white.

Fuzz started with a country song.
